Ceylon spinach
Ceylon spinach is a tender, fast growing climber that will easily reach 3m (10ft).
The leaves are picked and used in the same way as normal spinach – steamed, used in stir-fries or it is lovely in quiches or similar dishes.
Sow the seeds in pots of compost indoors with heat at 21C (70F) in February/March.
Plant outside in May or after the last frosts, after hardening off first, taking care not to disturb the roots.
Plants will grow in full sun or light shade. The soil must be rich and well drained, but plants need regular watering during dry periods.
Don’t be tempted to start harvesting until the plant has reached a good height and has produced plenty of leaves; over-picking can prevent the plant producing more leaves and causes it to run to seed early.
