Claytonia
Claytonia is an attractive winter salad crop rich in vitamin C. It is also known as winter purslane or miner's lettuce. It can also be lightly boiled or steamed.
Sow thinly 13mm (0.5in) deep in mid-summer outdoors or late summer and early autumn in a cold greenhouse in rows 15cm (6in) apart.
Seeds can also be sown in spring.
Plants do best in a slightly shaded position.
When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 5-10cm (2-4in) apart.
Keep the soil moist during dry periods.
Outdoor sowings may need cloche protection during bad weather.
Leaves can be cut as needed from September to December, or sometimes until as late as March. Continue harvesting the leaves until the plant starts to flower in spring.
