Weather Hill Cottage Entrance to Bowles' Corner
Planting List and Pictures

Bowles' Corner can be found at the base of Weather Hill Cottage where Oakwood, the original home of George Fergusson Wilson stands.

This secluded corner of the garden is often missed by visitors but is well worth searching out. The area is dedicated to the great gardener Edward Augustus Bowles, who had a long association with the RHS and a fascination for what he called 'demented' plants, those that have abnormal habit or appearance.

Corylus avellana 'Contorta' (corkscrew hazel) Crataegus monogyna 'Corkscrew'

Two of the most intriguing plants are Corylus avellana 'Contorta' (corkscrew hazel) and Crataegus monogyna 'Corkscrew' which both have twisted and distorted stems.

Other plants to look out for include many that were first raised and named by Bowles together with Crocus and Colchicum, another of Bowles' interests, which carpet the area during the spring.
