This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.
It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
P. delavayi is a rhizomatous perennial producing circular leaves up to 30cm across with deep, jagged lobes. These emerge heavily bronzed in spring, changing to very dark green mottling with age. Clusters of narrow, hanging, dark red flowers are produced below the leaves in summer, followed by black fruit
'Gallery Pablo' is a compact plant to 50cm, with light coral-red flowerheads, the florets shading to apricot-yellow towards the base
'Lucy' is a cultivar that reaches 90cm in height. It flowers early, in late summer to early autumn, bearing sprays of anemone-style flowers with yellow centres and pale pink florets
A. thomsonii is a clump-forming perennial, to 1m tall, with oval, toothed leaves, up to 10cm long, on hairy stems. Flowerheads, up to 5cm across, comprising lavender-blue rays and a central yellow disk, are held on slender branches from late summer into autumn
A. altissima is a tall herbaceous perennial to about 1.7m with brown stems and grey-green, nettle like leaves. Umbel-like clusters of small, white, long-lived flowers appear in summer and early autumn
'Alison Taylor' grows to 60cm in height, with up to 5 flowers per stem, the standards ochre yellow fading to cream in the centre, the falls bright lemon yellow edged with ochre yellow
'Firebird' is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial to 2m tall with upright or slightly drooping sword-like leaves rangeing in colour from bronze-green through purple-green to bronze-orange with bright red stripes and margins. In summer, erect stems bearing panicles of tubular red flowers may appear
'Ashby' is a bushy plant growing to 90cm tall and wide at maturity. The lobed, scented leaves are mid- to dark-green and flowers are a pink-purple colour with dark central markings on the upper petals
'Claire Maxine' is most notable for its gleaming, puckered foliage, mid-green, reddening in winter. Flowers are deep pink but sometimes hidden beneath the leaves; flowers mostly in spring with sporadic flowers produced through to October
'Diana Clare' is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial with narrow silvery-green leaves, lightly speckled with dark green near the margins, and violet-blue flowers from late winter to late spring
