Plants grown as A. africanus are evergreen perennials with strap-shaped leaves and erect stems to 0.8m, bearing umbels of deep blue, trumpet-shaped flowers in summer
'Langdon's Blue Lagoon' is an erect, vigorous perennial to 195cm, branching and floriferous, with large green leaves. Spikes to 90cm long, flowers 7cm across, mid-blue with white eyes
'Ushguli Grijs' is a herbaceous perennial, up to 30cm high, forming dense clumps with lobed green leaves, tinted red in autumn, and grey-blue flowers, with purple veins, in early summer
'Golden Jubilee' is an upright, clump-forming perennial, to 90cm tall and wide, with aromatic, lance-shaped, yellow-green foliage. Spikes of fragrant, tubular, violet-blue flowers are borne from summer into autumn
'Icterina' is a evergreen dwarf sub-shrub with aromatic, oblong leaves 3-6cm long, greyish, variegated with yellow and pale green. Two-lipped pale purplish-blue flowers 2cm long, in terminal racemes
'Mariesii Lilacina' is a compact deciduous shrub with lace-cap flower-heads with mauve-pink to blue sterile flowers surrounding blue fertile flowers, in late summer
I. lazica is a spring flowering evergreen, rhizomatous perennial to 25cm in height, with arching glossy green leaves and deep purple or lavender-blue flowers 6-8cm in width, the base of the falls veined on a white ground
'Tirra Lirra' is a vigorous but compact herbaceous perennial to 30cm in height, with glaucous green foliage and soft greyish blue flowers, the falls greyer, with white beards tipped with orange
'Azurea' is a deciduous perennial to 30cm tall, forming a clump of lance-shaped, unspotted green leaves, with pink buds opening to bright blue flowers in spring
'Moerheim' is a compact dwarf evergreen shrub to 60cm tall, with small, glossy leaves which are tinged purple in winter, and broadly funnel-shaped, light violet-blue flowers 2.5cm across in small clusters in spring
