It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Lucy' is a cultivar that reaches 90cm in height. It flowers early, in late summer to early autumn, bearing sprays of anemone-style flowers with yellow centres and pale pink florets
A. thomsonii is a clump-forming perennial, to 1m tall, with oval, toothed leaves, up to 10cm long, on hairy stems. Flowerheads, up to 5cm across, comprising lavender-blue rays and a central yellow disk, are held on slender branches from late summer into autumn
A. altissima is a tall herbaceous perennial to about 1.7m with brown stems and grey-green, nettle like leaves. Umbel-like clusters of small, white, long-lived flowers appear in summer and early autumn
'Claire Maxine' is most notable for its gleaming, puckered foliage, mid-green, reddening in winter. Flowers are deep pink but sometimes hidden beneath the leaves; flowers mostly in spring with sporadic flowers produced through to October
'Diana Clare' is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial with narrow silvery-green leaves, lightly speckled with dark green near the margins, and violet-blue flowers from late winter to late spring
'Southern Charm' is a clump-forming, upright, sometimes short-lived perennial to 1.2m high, its greyish-green, hairy leaves forming a basal rosette. Long spikes of flowers in pastel shades ranging from cream, pale pink, apricot and lavender with purple stamens are borne in summer
'Karneol' is an upright perennial to 1.2m tall, flowering in late summer and autumn, the flowerheads with spreading deep red ray florets surrounding a brown centre
'Orange Glow' forms a small clump of rounded, palmately lobed basal leaves, with deep yellow flowers 2-3cm wide, sitting above deeply divided green bracts and opening in late winter and early spring
'Ms Mars Improved' is a compact, branching annual to 60cm tall with purple-flushed, oval to heart-shaped leaves. Flowers up to 15cm across borne from summer into early autumn have very dark centres surrounded by deep pink-red petals the outer tips of which are cream coloured
'Dalmation Cream' is a biennial or short-lived perennial to 60cm tall with a basal rosette of toothed, dark green leaves. Upright spikes of cream flowers with purple-spotted throats are borne in early summer; this cultivar typically flowers in its first year
