It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
'Shiro-kapitan' is an anticlockwise twining cultivar. The leaves are up to 35cm long with about 11 downy leaflets. Flowers in hanging sprays 10-15cm long are white with a central yellow stain and highly scented . The bean-like seedpods are velvety and up to 20cm long
'Caroline' is a vigorous climber, twining clockwise and blooming before the leaves open. The pale blue-purple flowers are borne in dense trusses up to 30cm long, from a relatively young age
W. sinensis f. alba is a large deciduous climber with twining stems, pinnate leaves and short racemes of fragrant, pure white, pea-like flowers opening before the new leaves
'Burford' is a clockwise-twining cultivar. The scented flowers are pale violet, with a deeper purple keel and wings, produced in hanging racemes up to 40cm long, in early summer
'Domino' is a clockwise-twining cultivar. The scented flowers are lilac blue, produced in short trusses about 20cm long, in early summer
W. sinensis is a large deciduous climber with twining stems, dark green, pinnate leaves and drooping racemes to 30cm in length, of fragrant, mauve or lilac-coloured flowers opening before the leaves
'Jako' is an anticlockwise-twining cultivar. The white flowers are produced in late spring or early summer, before the leaves open, and are strongly fragrant. Velvety green, bean-like seed pods follow
'Amethyst' is an anticlockwise-twining cultivar. The flowers are produced in late spring or early summer, before the leaves open, and are strongly fragrant, reddish- violet with a yellow blotch inside. Velvety green bean-like seed pods follow. The leaves have around 11 leaflets, and emerge deep bronze
