Mother and daughter enjoy the planted borders

We welcomed our 500,000th member to the RHS in early 2019, thank you to all our members for enabling us to bring the joy of gardening to millions of people.

We’ve remained true to our core mission to promote and inspire people to grow plants and garden, but this gardening charity has changed considerably since we were formed in 1804, and is accessible now to even more people.

Encouraging and helping everyone to garden has never been so important. We all know the power of gardening, but it’s still too often a challenge to get it seriously recognised for the positive difference it makes to lives and the environment.

Growing the future generation

Thanks to your support we’re also able to give six million children access to nature through gardening, with our RHS Campaign for School Gardening. We've also worked with 3,000 community gardening groups, including those of Britain in Bloom and It's Your Neighbourhood. We want to continue growing the UK’s gardening community, as we believe that growing plants really can make the world a better place and we couldn't do all of this without you.

The benefits of gardening

Women from Young Saheliya enjoy gardening activitiesOur partnership with the NHS shows the benefits that gardening can have on health and wellbeing. The landmark £4 million Heritage Lottery Fund donation for RHS Garden Wisley projects demonstrates an awareness of the importance of gardening science and our growing membership indicates an increasing appreciation of reconnecting with nature.

There is still so much for us to do, which is why we're creating  RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford. At RHS Garden Wisley, the home of gardening science, we’re developing the UK's first National Centre for Horticultural Science and Learning to help protect our green planet.

We're achieving big goals because of your support

  • Training more than 1000 teachers every year
  • Helping more than 2,500 gardening groups, including many in socio-economically deprived areas, to transform public spaces all over Britain
  • Carrying out ground-breaking research to help Britain's 27 million gardeners cope with climate change and to protect us against the very real threat of plant pests and diseases
  • Inspiring millions of people to garden through beautiful annual flower shows, four gardens and in 2020 a fifth garden RHS Garden Bridgewater, in Salford, Greater Manchester
