Supporting you

No matter who you are, discover the countless ways that we support, welcome, and encourage you to grow when you join the RHS

Caring for our people

We care for everyone who works here. Join us and you’ll find the RHS is a supportive, flexible organisation that nurtures your talents, develops your skills and is committed to helping you be the very best you can be. We have an active internal forum called Voices, which meets regularly with decision-makers, and annual performance reviews for everyone.

We value everyone’s wellbeing and strive to create a supportive workplace where everyone can thrive. Our Employee Assistance Programme offers unlimited mental health support as well as remote GP appointments. We also have a network of Mental Health First Aiders and dedicated resources to help support you with your wellbeing.

“I’m working with a team of magnificent people, it’s allowed me to use skills that haven’t seen the light of day for many years – it’s a real privilege actually.”

Michaela, Science Volunteer

What diversity and inclusion mean to us

We value the individuality of everyone who works for the RHS and believe that our differences make us an amazing workplace and a more effective organisation. We know that you can only reach your full potential when you can truly be yourself. By actively tackling the issues around inequality, we aim to ensure we’re ready now and for the future.

It’s about all of us working in a supportive and flexible environment led by inclusive, effective leaders to create a culture of belonging and cultural and social equity. And taking collective and individual ownership to bring about positive change, so everyone here feels empowered to thrive because we all feel we belong.

Together we thrive

We have a growing number of voluntary, ‘people networks’ that build relevant communities at the RHS and engage everyone in conversations about diversity and inclusion. They give you the chance to connect with like-minded people and play your part in helping us develop an inclusive culture. Currently, you can benefit from our LGBTQ+ Network (Rainbow Roots), Menopause Network, and Neurodiversity Network. But we are committed to supporting our people to set up more.

Building a better workplace

We want to build a workplace where everyone can perform at their best and enjoy working in more diverse, inclusive, and supportive teams. To create these stronger, more diverse teams and ensure we reflect a broad section of society, we collect monitoring questions on social mobility, so we can better represent our local communities.

As a manager, you will be encouraged to develop a culture that empowers people and prioritises their health and wellbeing. To achieve this, we’ve created an internal action group, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing (DIW), with people who are passionate about our strategic approach to DIW and guiding us on how best to deliver our action plan.

Supporting your wellbeing

At the RHS, we value and care for your wellbeing – whether that’s physical, social, financial, or psychological. We believe creating and sustaining a healthy workplace where everyone can thrive is essential to develop sustainable success.

We know that actively promoting your wellbeing leads to greater productivity, morale, and retention, as well as reduced sickness absence. That’s why we’re developing an inclusive and supportive work environment, with the importance of your wellbeing built into everything we do.
