Update: getting gardening advice at RHS Shows

RHS experts are on hand to give you free gardening advice at the RHS Flower Shows - but there are a few important changes visitors need to know...

Advisor with visitorsHave you ever been to an RHS Flower Show and wondered where you could get gardening advice?

RHS Gardening Advice has a team of dedicated advisors who are on hand to answer your gardening questions at shows. Face-to-face advice is available for all show visitors, and the RHS Gardening Advice stand can be found in the floral marquee at Cardiff, Chelsea, Hampton Court and Tatton Park as well as the Malvern Spring Festival.

We will also be giving gardening advice at the flower shows at RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, Hyde Hall and Wisley this summer. Whether you are a beginner or an expert gardener we will do our best to answer your questions – no question is too big or too small!

One of the highlights of my job as an RHS Horticultural Advisor is going to the shows and meeting local gardeners and RHS members. It is also great to look around the show and see the fantastic show gardens and nursery displays. The nurserymen themselves are a great source of specialist knowledge and visiting shows gives me the opportunity to keep up to date with the latest gardening developments. And of course I always go home with a few new plants!

Visitors getting gardening adviceQuestions, Questions

As you can imagine, we are asked all sorts of questions, from "what’s wrong with my plant?" to choosing the best plant for a particular situation.

It helps us give the best answer to your question if we have the right information, so if you’d like to ask a question here’s our quick guide on what to bring with you:

  • Photographs of the plant or the problem area (on your phone, tablet or printed out). To help us make the best diagnosis or identification please ensure your photographs show a picture of the whole plant and a close-up of the leaves and flowers.
  • Details about the growing conditions of the plant eg. location, soil type, aspect (eg. sun/shade)
  • If you would like a plant identified, please bring a good-sized sample, ideally including flowers

Please don’t bring plant samples with pests or diseases to shows as there is a risk of spreading the problems to healthy plants

The RHS Gardening Advice team will be at the Cardiff flower show from 15-17 April in the Floral Marquee, and also answering your questions in a gardening Q & A at 11am on Friday and Sunday.

This year I’m going to be at RHS Flower Show Cardiff for the first time. I’m really looking forward to this as my colleagues say it is a great show and a lovely city. I’m especially keen to see the displays in the floral marquee, including wonderful daffodils and I hope I’ll have the opportunity to have a look around Bute Park.

If you are going to a show this year do come and say hello, we’d love to meet you. If you aren’t able to get to a show, don’t forget RHS members can contact RHS Gardening Advice for free personalised advice throughout the year. Please have a look at our information on our website for details about this service.
