A golden day for Britain in Bloom launch

You can never count on it in Britain, but to our utter delight, golden sunshine beamed out of a blue sky for Stony Stratford in Bloom’s Growing for Gold Sunflower planting event in Wolverton  Road Park on 16 April!

You can never count on it in Britain, but to our utter delight, golden sunshine beamed out of a blue sky for Stony Stratford in Bloom’s Growing for Gold Sunflower planting event in Wolverton  Road Park on 16 April!

We know from our gardening sessions in local schools that children love planting seeds – particularly sunflower seeds, which don’t float away when you breathe – so we contacted the local play centre to see if they’d like to join us during the Easter holidays to commemorate 50 years of Britain in Bloom.

A bunch of 21 enthusiastic children gathered in the park, eager to plant the free sunflower seeds sent to Stony Stratford in Bloom (SSIB) by the RHS as part of the Growing for Gold celebrations. Some of the children were from The Space Play Centre, others had heard about the event from SSIB volunteers – and some just happened to be passing and ran over to join in.

Volunteers from the nearby allotments also helped out – providing a trestle table and a tarpaulin for easier pot-planting. Each pot was labelled, and when it’s time to replant the little sunflowers in the bed along the Wolverton Allotments Fence, then the children will be contacted to take part in the next stage of planting. In the autumn there’ll be a competition, and after the flowers are measured, the winner of the tallest sunflower will receive a small prize.

Meanwhile, we’re all looking forward to a beautiful blaze of gold when the sunflowers bloom over the summer. Please, slugs, don’t gobble them all up!

We’ve got a few other plans for 50 Year Celebrations too. I’m researching a talk on the History of Britain in Bloom and its impact on Stony Stratford, and we’re trying our hand at tapestry planting for the first time ever.
