TPortrait of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, c.1770-75, by Richard Cosway (17421821)/Private Collection/Bridgeman Imageshe Account Book of Capability Brown

This book is one of the treasures in the archive of the RHS Lindley Library. It is one of few surviving records from the life of Britain’s greatest landscape architect – Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. It was used by him between 1759 and 1783 to record payments made by his clients.

In celebration of the 300 years since the birth of Capability Brown, we have formatted this historic document so that it can be viewed by everyone online. Browse and search this digitised version to explore the scale and scope of his work, which covered thousands of acres and cost the equivalent of millions of pounds in today’s money.
