Improvements for visitors
The Upper Reading Room has been refurbished to create an open access lending library with a brand new entrance and improved reception area.
The Research Room has also been refurbished to provide better accomodation for our heritage collections. See our Appointments Calendar if you would like to work in the Research Room.
Aims of the project
The Library was closed to allow us to complete Phase One of the Lindley Hall and Library Key Investment Project. Key Investment Projects are part of a £100m investment programme which the RHS is undertaking over the next 10 years. The aim of this project is to enable the Lindley Library to develop as a stimulating and accessible centre for the study and research of gardens, garden history and botanical art. The project has equipped us to safeguard, share and showcase its fabulous and unique heritage collections.
Benefits to the Library
New entrance and reception
The entrance improvement was completed in August 2016 greatly increasing our accessibility and improving the welcome that we can give. We now have a selection of RHS publications for sale, together with leaflets and publicity material.
Improved exhibition space
A small display area has been created in the Upper Reading Room. This consists two display cases and some flexible wall panels and allows us to safely and securely display some of the rare treasures of the Lindley Library, which have rarely been seen in public. The new exhibition programme is now available and you can get updates and previews by subscribing to our e-newsletter
Better storage for our collections
The air conditioning system in key storage areas, has been improved to enable us to maintain the best environmental conditions for our rare and irreplaceable heritage collections.
