Situated near the North Cotswolds market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, Batsford Arboretum is home to possibly one of the country’s largest private collections of trees and shrubs. Wander through 60 acres of wild gardens, paths and streams and marvel at beautiful views across the Evenlode Valley beyond.
Beginning in the 1880s, the arboretum also has several oriental curiosities brought from Japan by Lord Redesdale – including a large bronze Buddha and an oriental rest-house. The arboretum is mainly the work of the late Lord Dulverton, who added a large number of new plantings between 1956 and 1992. These include nearly 100 different magnolia cultivars, a comprehensive collection of Japanese cherries, some very beautiful conifers, and excellent collections of genera such as acers, Betula and Sorbus. Some are already record-breakers and all are in the prime of their life, well-grown and vigorous.
Visit Batsford in any season to find much to admire and enjoy.
