About the garden

Owned by
Mr & Mrs Frank Lawley

This excellent plantsman's garden is firmly designed and meticulously planted. The formal garden (very simple, very full) relies on contrasts of colour, texture and shape of clipped evergreens - a model of how to impart a sense of size and space to a very small space. There is topiary throughout the garden; it also provides shelter for tender plants like 'Gloire de Dijon' roses. The knot garden is famous, and much photographed, full of herbs and pharmacological plants. The main garden is best seen from the staircase at the back of the house; it has a very firm structure, furnished with evergreen shrubs clipped into endless inventive forms to give interest all through the year. More impressive still are the cottagey herbaceous plantings, all weaving through each other in beautifully co-ordinated colours. In the gazebo at the top are photographs showing how the garden has developed, expanded, grown up and intensified over the years: a most inspirational display. A modern masterpiece.
