About the garden

Owned by
Tim Culkin & Austin Lynch

Millgate House & Garden is a South-East facing walled garden on a steeply falling slope with views to the open countryside and the river Swale and its waterfalls beyond. The current owners have been gardening here since 1980, where it was named the winner of the first RHS National Garden Competition and selected by Alan Titchmarsh for his series Britain's Best Gardens.

The garden is a plantsman's garden packed with shrubs, hostas, ferns, roses, topiary and clematis. One RHS council member wrote on a recent visit, "The garden is inspirational, exuberant, confident and brilliantly maintained, designed to look relaxed and informal. There is a profusion of plants artfully arranged in great combinations of form, shape, size and colour. It's a real lesson in what can be achieved in a comparatively small space on sloping ground”.
