Mr & Mrs James Lowther
The outlines of the garden at Holdenby are Elizabethan: a bowling alley, some parterres and terraces which were built in 1580 to impress Queen Elizabeth on one of her progresses through England. They explain why Holdenby is so highly regarded as an historical garden. What we see now is modern and pretty. The Elizabethan-style garden was planted by Rosemary Verey, using only those plants which were available in 1580. Rupert Golby planted the 'fragrant border' and there is a charming 'silver border' made to display the owners' ever-growing collection of silver- and grey-leaved plants.
