Garden Manager - RHS Hyde Hall

I am very keen on encouraging people to make horticulture their career.

I have worked at RHS Garden Hyde Hall for over 13 years and I am currently a Garden Manager. This role involves me overseeing the management and maintenance of the Hilltop Garden which is the original part of the garden and contains classic ornamental features such as the Herbaceous Border and Rose Gardens as well as more modern and dynamic features such as the Robinson Garden with its striking gabion wall and moisture loving plants and the Dry Garden with its extensive range of drought tolerant plants set in a rocky Mediterranean landscape. I also oversee the management of all the turf areas at the garden, and the lawn in the Hilltop Garden is amongst the finest in the RHS with its lush green sward. I am very keen on encouraging people to make horticulture their career and I oversee both our traineeship and our newly launched apprenticeship which is aiming to encourage youngsters into the industry. The great thing about my job is that I can see a project through from its initial inception and design, through its implementation to its completion and then watch the design grow and mature in the garden.

Before I started at Hyde Hall I studied at RHS Garden Wisley and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and completed a degree in Landscape Management. After an academic course it was great to start to put into practise what I had been taught and although my job is now split between the practical and management tasks I now have a small garden of my own where I can grow my favourite plants such as Diascia personata and Agapanthus ‘Windlebrooke’.
