Horticulturist (Level II)

I enjoy the challenge of maintaining the gardens to a high standard

I was always under the impression that you didn’t need to enjoy your job as long as it paid the bills. It took 6 long years of mundane employment to realise this. I had always been interested in the outside world and thanks to my parents who are keen gardeners themselves I decided to enrol at Writtle College to study Horticulture at a National Diploma level. During this time I gained a traineeship at RHS Hyde Hall where I really started to blossom (no pun intended!) It was great to put into practice things we learnt in the classroom and get a real practical grip on horticultural techniques.

I must have done something right at Hyde Hall because I applied for a position a year later and was successful. That was 6 years ago and time has flown by since. On a day to day basis I oversee the Queen Mothers Garden, Australian / New Zealand Garden, on site composting, pond management and plant sourcing for the entire garden. I have played a part in the planning and development of the garden including the new visitor building, courtyard gardens and dry garden extension. I can honestly say that no two days are ever the same and I enjoy the challenge of maintaining the gardens to a high standard.
