Horticulturist, RHS Garden Wisley

I love working in horticulture as the work is seasonal and every week is different

I have worked as a Horticulturist in the Seed Team at RHS Garden Wisley for almost four years now. My job primarily involves collecting seed, drying and cleaning it and ultimately packing it ready for distribution to our RHS members in January.

The Seed Team is made up of myself, Heather Cooke my Team Leader and 10 fantastic volunteers who each give their time one day a week. I love working in horticulture because the work is seasonal and therefore every week is different.

I get to visit all parts of the garden, collecting seed throughout the year from the tranquillity of the early morning to warmth of the afternoon which lends me an intimate relationship with the garden.

I came into horticulture later in life after studying Horticulture at Writtle College in Essex. Previously I worked as a nursery nurse so you could say I have gone from preparing children for the big wide world to preparing seed!

My interests include understanding medicinal herbs and foraging for interesting accompaniments to my dinner which I then prepare back at home on my boat for me and my appreciative neighbours. Unfortunately my boat cat Molly prefers a more carnivorous diet but I’ll leave that kind of foraging to her.
