From tots to teens and beyond

We're looking to the future with apprentices, students and plenty of entertainment for younger visitors

Moongate entrance to play areaWell I know that I say this every week; ad infinitum; but it’s all very exciting here, as our long awaited Young Explorers’ play area, specially designed for children two to five years old is now officially open.

First, you walk through the moon gate and then through a winding path into a secret corralled area where you will find a little wooden dinghy with moving handles (oars?) and a steering wheel.

Then onward to a large and scary spider who we’ve named Colin; but I’m sure the marketing department will think of something more imaginative to call him (he’ll always be Colin to me).

Colin the children's play spiderAfter this, scurry along next to a lakeside house complete with rope ladder and steps. There is no lakeside next to it, only long meadow and winding mown paths; but it does look well sat in this landscape. We hope all our two to five year olds out there will enjoy playing on it this summer.

Out of school….
This week we have got two work experience students from local schools with us who are having a taste of how life in a garden operates. They look very young to me; but that is a sure sign of me getting older I think!

Nick and HarryThey have had a good amount of varied work in our Kitchen Garden, the Alpine House and the floral herbaceous areas and have enjoyed it immensely - good luck with your future careers Harry and Nick!

…and into work
Our apprentices: Harry and Josh, will have just finished their first year with us at the beginning of August, it’s hard to imagine that they’ve been here a year already.

They are now anxiously waiting for their exam results (as a lot of the country will be I’m guessing). It’s then onto the practical side of their two year course and they will be joined in this with two new apprentices: Tom and Matthew, who will be starting with us in early August.
