Chicken run confusion and a grand day out

Erecting the run has been a challenge most difficult - the instructions led to much confusion and scratching of heads among the productive team

Harlow Carr's Woodland team at Parcevall HallLast week I took the Woodland team off site for a team visit to Parcevall Hall, which is one of our Partner Gardens set in Wharfedale in the middle of the lovely Yorkshire Dales National Park. It was a final trip for Katie who leaves to have her baby in seven weeks and a welcome to Kevin who has just joined the Woodland team with responsibility for turf.

We had a wonderful time and saw extensive collections of trilliums. We also went into their eight-acre woodland, Tibet Wood, which was built by Italian Prisoners of War in 1944 – what a marvellous activity and lasting memorial to this windswept corner of the Dales.

New Garden Advisors

Recently we met our new Garden Advisors. They were being introduced to the garden and meeting the garden team. Dr John Grimshaw is Director of the Yorkshire Arboretum and Sarah Eberle is a reknowned landscape designer. It was great to meet them both and their experience and knowledge will be most welcome in our planning and execution of the garden here over the coming months and years.

Temperamental weather

As I write this it is hailing outside! Such strange weather we are having and for once I am glad I’m tied up in the office, nose in the computer.

Chicken run nears completion

Head scratching from the Harlow Carr team over how to build the chicken runThere has been a flurry of activity in the kitchen garden as the finishing touches to the chicken run are put together ready for the arrival of the chickens.

The grass has grown so long in there that we’ll only see the chickens' heads until they get it under control. Erecting the run has been a challenge most difficult – the instructions led to much confusion and scratching of heads among the team. Several attempts later – once the roof stays had been put on inside out and then reversed – it finally looked like a presentable chicken run. Only the best for our ladies!
