Award for Dorothy Clive Garden

Staffordshire garden picks up Heritage Lottery Fund grant

Waterfall at the Dorothy Clive Garden, an RHS Partner GardenThe Dorothy Clive Garden at Willoughbridge has been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will  be used to focus on the heritage of the garden.

The 12-acre garden is located in a wooded part of Staffordshire close to the Shropshire and Cheshire borders. There are many areas of diverse interest within the garden, including a Winter Garden, an edible woodland, a woodland quarry with waterfall and rose walk. The garden also has several notable collections of plants including: rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and ericaceous planting built up by enthusiasts over the past 80 years.

The grant will be used to focus on the heritage of the garden, how it came to fruition, the people associated with the garden and the history of the garden’s planting.

Researchers will endeavour to find out more about the garden's founder Colonel Harry Clive himself, his life, his motivation for establishing the garden, and how he developed it, providing the foundations for the garden as it is today.

Memories and oral histories of those associated with the garden over the past 60 years will be collected.

Interpretation around the garden will be improved too, so that more details can be shared about the garden's namesake and inspiration, Dorothy Clive.

About the garden

The Dorothy Clive Garden is both owned and managed by the Willoughbridge Garden Trust, a registered charity, which has been managed as a trust since 1958.

It was previously owned by Colonel Harry Clive who began developing the garden in the 1930s for the benefit of his ailing wife. At that time it covered an area of about 2.5 acres.
