Tutor - Ian Harrison (Chair, Rolle Canal and N Devon Waterways) In the late 18th century Devon's roads were narrow and rough, so heavy goods were often transported up rivers as far as the tide would take them. The soil was heavy clay and infertile, however, it was known that the addition of limestone either crushed or burnt, was a great soil improver. Crushing was not possible but burning was, so a network of lime kilns were built and linked by the Rolle Canal. Take a look behind the scenes to see Rosemoor's lime kiln, following Ian's talk about the Rolle Canal, its history and how the kiln was used.
