There’s no more valuable perennial for damp soil in sun than the globeflower,
Trollius, but for many years our choice has been limited to the same old varieties. But one of the stars of this year’s
Chelsea Plant Of The Year awards, and Best In Show at the recent
New Plant Awards at the National Plant Show, was a new introduction -
Trollius ‘Dancing Flame’.
Presenting the plant to the judges at the Chelsea Plant Of The Year awards, Rosy Hardy of
Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants explained its good qualities:
“It’s a very vibrant orange, large-flowered form,” she said, “and instead of the stems coming up with just one flower it’s multi-headed so lasts for a very long time… It’s late spring and early summer flowering, but it’s in flower for at least eight weeks. It makes cracking big clumps and holds itself up well; the heads of some
Trollius are so heavy that they flop and fall over, this one stands upright and is a very good garden plant.”
At the National Plant Show Stan Green, President of the
Horticultural Trades Association and a member of the judging panel said: "
Trollius 'Dancing Flame' has great appeal with its vibrant colour, dramatic flowers and upright form making it a fantastic plant for any herbaceous border. It has a real 'wow factor'.”
‘Dancing Flame’ was developed by Patrick Fairweather at his family wholesale nursery in Hampshire and is the result of repeated selection after sowing seed of
Trollius yunnanensis many years ago.
