Breakthrough windowbox clematis

Top breeder launches the first large flowered clematis that's neat enough for troughs and pots

The dream of a bushy little clematis with large flowers on well-behaved compact plants has now become a reality with the introduction of Clematis Elodi ('Evipo115').

Clematis Elodi ('Evipo115')Shortlisted for the 2019 Chelsea Plant of The Year Award, where it just missed out on a top three finish, master clematis breeder Raymond Evison has created a large flowered clematis that is small and neat enough to grow in windowboxes, hanging baskets and at the front of patio borders.

"Clematis Elodi is totally different from the normal large flowered clematis due to its very compact and non-climbing habit" said Raymond when he presented the plant at the Chelsea Plant of The Year Award assessment meeting. "Ideal for container culture, a small garden or a balcony it’s dwarf naturally – no pinching, no chemicals. It remains as a mounding plant: it does not climb and it does not trail. It flowers in early summer and it’s also repeat flowering to mid to late summer."

This first variety in Raymond’s new Tudor Patio Collection, individual flowers are pinkish mauve with darker veins and darker margins and the  eight overlapping pointed petals create a very full look.

You can order plants of Clematis Elodi ('Evipo115') from Taylors Clematis and from the Burford Garden Company.
