A big improvement on the old favourite ‘Constance Eliott’, the pure white flowers of ‘Snow Queen’ are almost 50% larger and remain open for two or three days, compared to a single day for ‘Constance Eliott’.
The combination of larger and longer-lasting flowers leads to a far more colourful display.
‘Snow Queen’ is the latest in a series of fine new introductions, and the second in his Riverside® Series, from Myles Irvine, a gym owner from the quiet London suburb of Surbiton. He told me about his latest introduction.
“‘Snow Queen’ produces spectacular large pure white flowers which remain open for several days,” he said. “It is an easy to care for, vigorous, hardy and floriferous climbing vine and will flourish in a dry sunny location with free draining soil. ‘Snow Queen’ can be grown over an obelisk, on a trellis perhaps as fence cover, in a pot on the patio or even in a conservatory.”
Myles developed ‘Snow Queen’ by using, in 2007, pollen from an unusually hardy form of Passiflora caerulea to fertilise flowers of ‘White Wedding’. In 2011 he selected ‘Snow Queen’ from the seedlings for the purity of its large, long-lasting white flowers and for its vigour and hardiness.
‘Snow Queen’ won the award for best new shrub or climber at last year’s National Plant Show.
