It is included in an evolving list of plants carefully researched and chosen by RHS experts. Divided into 3 groups these lists, linked below, are maintained by a team of RHS staff and are reviewed annually.
P. radiata is a vigorous evergreen conifer making a large tree to 30m or more, developing a broad rounded crown with maturity. Dense dark green needles in threes, and persistent, conical-ovoid cones to 15cm in length
P. ponderosa is an evergreen conifer making a large tree with handsome, scaly brown bark. Needles dark green, to 25cm in length, mostly clustered at branch ends. Cones about 15cm in length
P. muricata is a medium-sized evergreen tree developing a narrow, flat-topped crown, with stiff, green to dark grey-green needles to 12cm in length, in pairs. Prickly ovoid cones persist on the tree for many years
'Aurea' is a slow-growing evergreen tree with blue-green needles that turn yellow from late autumn to spring
'Aurea' is an attractive conical shape when young, eventually forming a large, broad-topped tree. The needles are 10-15cm long, borne in threes and golden yellow. Brown cones are produced in clusters on mature trees and remain in place for years
'Adcock's Dwarf' is a dense, slow-growing evergreen conifer making a small, rounded shrub, with short, blue-green needles in fives, clustered at the branch-tips
P. pinea is an evergreen conifer making a round-topped evergreen tree with stiff, dark green needles to 15cm long. Cones rounded-ovoid, to 15cm long, shiny light brown. It will reach 15-20m when fully mature
'Smidtii' is a very slow-growing conifer forming a broadly ovoid dwarf shrub with rigid, deep green needles
'Moseri' is a slow growing, compact, dwarf pine of irregular, broadly pyramidal shape. Needles in shorter tufts at the end of the branches are bright green in summer become golden-yellow in winter
P. wallichiana is a large broad-crowned evergreen tree retaining its spreading lower branches when grown in an open position. Long, slender, drooping blue-grey needles and banana-shaped cones up to 25cm long
