P. vacciniifolia is a creeping perennial forming a wide mat of small, glossy ovate leaves which turn rusty-brown and persist through the winter. Slender spikes 6-8cm in length are packed with small pink flowers in late summer and early autumn
P. amplexicaulis is a robust, clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial with pointed, slightly puckered, oval, mid-green leaves, to 25cm long. Long-stalked narrow spikes, to 10cm long, of narrowly bell-shaped, bright-red to purple or white flowers, are borne from midsummer to early autumn. To 1.2m high and wide
'Hohe Tatra' is a clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial to 50cm in height, with strongly-veined, finely-pointed ovate leaves and dense spikes of small, pale pink flowers from late spring to midsummer
P. milletii is a clump-forming, upright, semi-evergreen perennial with linear to lance-shaped, pointed, dark green leaves to 30cm long with prominent mid-ribs. Profuse, dense, cylindrical spikes of slender, rich-crimson flowers from early summer to late autumn to 60cm tall
'Superba' is a vigorous clump-forming herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennial to 90cm in height, with strongly veined, finely pointed ovate leaves and dense spikes of small light pink flowers
P. bistorta is a vigorous rhizomatous perennial to 1m tall, with prominently veined, ovate leaves to 30cm long, and dense spikes of small pale pink flowers in summer and early autumn
P. affinis is a mat-forming herbaceous perennial about 25cm high with elliptic to lance-shaped dark green leaves, 5-15cm long, which turn red-bronze in autumn, and from midsummer to mid-autumn spikes 5-8cm long of flowers, each 5mm long, which open bright reddish pink, fade to pale pink, and then turn brown during winter; it is an excellent ground-cover plant
