R. officinalis is a bushy shrub with a dense, leafy habit, to 2m x 2m but variable in size. Linear dark green leaves 1.5-5cm long have recurved margins and pale, felty undersides. Flowers usually pale violet-blue and white. Flowering starts in spring but is often repeated at differing times of year. Both habit and flower colour can be variable, from prostrate to upright, from deep blue to paler and white tones, pink or purple. Many selections and cultivars are available
'Roseus' is an upright shrub with highly aromatic, needle-like leaves and small mauve-pink flowers in the upper leaf axils in spring and summer
'Gorizia' is a vigorous, aromatic, evergreen shrub with narrow, dark green leaves twice the size of most cultivars on stout, upright shoots to 1.5m. Relatively large, pale violet-blue flowers appear in spring and often again in autumn
'Foxtail' is a bushy, aromatic, evergreen shrub with dark green, needle-like leaves, silvery-grey underneath. Branching well from the base it initially forms a dome shape then arches over to become semi-prostrate. Small, pale blue flowers with darker markings are produced in spring
'Sissinghurst Blue' is an upright, medium-sized evergreen shrub with aromatic, linear leaves and abundant, two-lipped, rich blue flowers
R. officinalis is an aromatic, evergreen shrub to 2m x 2m but variable in size. The needle-like leaves are deep green with grey felted undersides and rolled down edges. Small, white, tubular flowers appear amongst the leaves, on and off, at almost any time from late winter to autumn
Prostratus Group are compact evergreen shrubs of prostrate habit, with linear, aromatic leaves and blue flowers in small axillary clusters in spring and summer, occasionally in autumn
'Miss Jessopp's Upright' is a compact, erect, medium-sized evergreen shrub with aromatic, narrowly oblong, dark green leaves, whitish beneath. Small, two-lipped light blue flowers are borne mainly in spring and summer
'Tuscan Blue' is an upright, aromatic, evergreen shrub to around 2m with somewhat broader leaves than the species, and deep blue, tubular flowers from in late winter
'Severn Sea' is a medium-sized evergreen shrub of arching habit, with aromatic, linear, dark green leaves and bright blue, two-lipped flowers in axillary clusters in spring and summer, sometimes again in autumn
