The falling leaves of surrounding trees and shrubs help to create a humus-rich woodland environment much appreciated by this genus
Whilst taking a break to give my knees a rest, I couldn?t help admiring the developing autumn colour down by the lake, enhanced by the reflection in the water and the contrast in the colours of the leaves with the white barked birch...What's more, unlike some other plants known for their autumn colour, the trees hold onto their leaves late into autumn
Heathers ( Calluna ), heaths ( Erica ) and Irish heath ( Daboecia ) thrive in an open, sunny position, but will tolerate light shade, such as under high-canopied deciduous trees...The best planting companions may include pines (all sizes to choose from), white stemmed birches , mountain ash species and cultivars ( Sorbus ), Cornus , acid-loving Gaultheria mucronata and Vaccinium...
Epimediums are also useful in the Birch Grove where groundcover plants form large clumps under the canopies of birches ( Betula utilis ?Fascination?) with their coppery-white stems
