Other features include many cherry trees ( Prunus) and magnolias for their spring flower display, lots of cool leafy shade for a relaxing walk on hot summer days, many trees with excellent autumn colour and a collection of birch ( Betula) planted for their attractive winter bark
Birches also respond well to being grown as multi-stemmed trees (where four to six main branches are allowed to grow from ground level), a useful trick to limit their vigour, reduce the ultimate height & spread and maximise the amount of colourful bark closer to the ground
When the autumn comes, many trees take on a more important role...One particularly good example is the black birch (aka river birch or red birch) Betula nigra...This is one of the trees that is featured on our brand new ' Beauty of Bark ' trail at RHS Garden Wisley that goes live on 12th November
