Plants affected Birch ( Betula ), hazel ( Corylus ), lime ( Tilia ) and many other broadleaved trees and shrubs including Cotoneaster and Pyracantha...Larval food plants include most native broadleaved trees and shrubs such as birch, blackthorn, elm, hawthorn, hazel, lime, oak and willow, as well as many cultivated plants including cotoneaster and pyracantha
2018 The beautiful bark of Himalayan birch lights up even the gloomiest winter day...The Himalayan birch, ( Betula utilis var. jacquemontii ) with its tactile white bark stands out among the crowd of autumnal-toned plantings...Planted extensively throughout the gardens, this birch is enchanting
Trees and shrubs provide height, so give an extra dimension to your garden...Too many trees or potentially large trees may outgrow their space...What trees and shrubs are best for my garden
In the arboretum, lovely silver birch trees - Betula utilis var. jacquemontii 'Doorenbos' AGM , provide an accent of stately white trunks
Trees have some ability to limit the spread of internal infection by responding to the fungus with natural chemical barriers...Some trees are known to be susceptible to certain bracket fungi: Fagus (beech), Fraxinus (ash) and Prunus are all very susceptible to specific bracket fungi...Gardeners are legally responsible for their trees and may be liable for prosecution if damage or injury results from falling timber
Dappled shade can approximate to light or open shade where sunlight filters through especially lightly branched and leaved deciduous trees such as silver birch...
Other features include many cherry trees ( Prunus) and magnolias for their spring flower display, lots of cool leafy shade for a relaxing walk on hot summer days, many trees with excellent autumn colour and a collection of birch ( Betula) planted for their attractive winter bark
Birches also respond well to being grown as multi-stemmed trees (where four to six main branches are allowed to grow from ground level), a useful trick to limit their vigour, reduce the ultimate height & spread and maximise the amount of colourful bark closer to the ground
When the autumn comes, many trees take on a more important role...One particularly good example is the black birch (aka river birch or red birch) Betula nigra...This is one of the trees that is featured on our brand new ' Beauty of Bark ' trail at RHS Garden Wisley that goes live on 12th November
