Expert advice at Malvern Autumn

Visitors heard inspiring talks and saw fascinating demonstrations around the show

There were a whole host of expert talks and demonstrations going on around the show at Malvern Autumn in 2018, giving visitors the opportunity to spruce up their knowledge, master a skill or learn something new.

There was something for everyone - whether guests were keen foodies, looking for advice to keep plants thriving throughout the colder months or wanted to feel inspired to try something out of the ordinary, there was an expert on hand at Malvern who could help.

Fruit celebrated in the Orchard Pavilion

Visitors headed to the Orchard Pavilion, Hopyard and Vineyard and learnt all about the versatility of the humble apple. Guests saw the annual Fruit Juice Show, could pick up fruit trees and also find preserves to enjoy long after the show had closed. There was a whole host of information on how modern-day orcharding practices compare to those practised by our ancestors.

In the Hopyard, the hop was celebrated and visitors discovered all about artisan ales, learning a thing or two about the brewing process of beer.

Veg in the Harvest Pavilion

The Harvest Pavilion that featured at Malvern Autumn in 2018 was home to nearly 30 National Plant Societies with experts on-hand to offer advice about their specialist area.

There was also plenty of veg to see – with the championships for the National Vegetable Society being featured here, as well as Malvern’s Grow to Show section, that had more than a whopping 1000 entries.

Experts from the RHS Tender Plant Committee hosted talks throughout the show in the Harvest Pavilion. This gave visitors the chance to ask any burning questions about their garden and get top advice.

Stars shone in the Autumn Potager Theatre

The Autumn Potager Theatre, hosted by award-winning food writer and grower, Mark Diacono, welcomed a host of expert celebrity guests from the food and horticultural worlds and gave daily demonstrations on growing and cooking.

BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein shared her wealth of knowledge and experience along with co-host Joe Swift, while writer, broadcaster, actor and former Conservative MP Gyles Brandreth, entertained with tales of his life and work.

Sizzling cookery demonstrations were headed up by chef and presenter from BBC’s What to Eat Now, Valentine Warner, while gardening writer and Guardian columnist Alys Fowler demonstrated how to make a variety of seasonal chutneys and pickles.

Celebrity florist and leading floral art designer Jonathan Moseley rounded up the line-up with a host of interactive workshops and demonstrations that championed British flowers.
