Bold and brave in its sheer austerity, Ann-Margreth Bohl's installation, 'Holocene', made up only of six stone blocks set in a circle of bare earth, is in fact a meticulously-placed, accurate sundial.

Named Holocene after the current geological epoch, this timepiece is aligned precisely with the sun’s movements. The sundial comprises a series of large sculptured stone blocks, sitting on a plot of raw, dug earth. Like a large sundial, the blocks cast a complex pattern of shadows at diffrent times of day. They are cut so that they appear to be flexing or moving, and in some cases even partially lifting off the ground. As well as being an installation on the themes of light and shadow, change and the passing of time, Holocene aims to intrigue and engage with visitors as they wait for the precise moment when the shadows falling on the stones align with the ‘shadows’ that are carved upon them: seeing whether the shadows do indeed ‘fit’ at the predicted time.
