Behind the Scenes

A tribute to the skills and effort of those who work behind the scenes in great gardens

About the Garden

This installation by Barbara Negretti and Elisa Tomat pays homage to everyday tasks that are the domain of the professional and inspired gardener. It is for the unsung workers who diligently labour to plant and maintain every successful garden created by notable designers, and on whose expertise and intimate knowledge of plants each garden is dependent.

Two huge hands, made of hay, have been crafted in the act of planting an English oak tree. From them spring wildflowers, a nod to the farming tradition of the Chatsworth estate and a link to the present fashionable ecological design style that requires practical knowledge of wild plant communities.
