Long Border

Did you know...

  • The design was inspired by artists including David Hockley and Priscilla Watkins who did a series of paintings about Brockwell Lido in south London
  • Splashes of Stachys give an almost frothy edge to the blues and purples of the planting
  • Salvia 'Amistad' and Delphinium 'Magic Fountain' add height

About the garden

The border was inspired by the ripples of a swimming pool on a hot day, and David Hockney’s series of swimming pool paintings including A Bigger Splash. To emulate this, a colour palette of blues, dark purples and whites was chosen. The border comprises herbaceous perennials, shrubs, grasses and annuals. Dark purple salvias are planted in a zigzag, drawing the eye through the planting and creating the sense of movement. Interspersed are bright blue delphiniums and baptisia. Tall grasses such as Helictotrichon sempervirens add height and Festuca glauca adds texture. A frothy white haze of Ammi majus represents splashes.
