Summer Breeze

Long Border

Did you know...

  • Gently swaying grasses, including Stipa and Deschampsia hold the planting together and provide a useful foil for the colourful flowers
  • An award-winning garden plant Salvia 'Caradonna' evokes the blues of the gathering dusk while at the other end of the garden evening primroses provide sunset tones

About the garden

The Summer Breeze border is a celebration of the elusive British summer. A wash of ornamental grasses sway in the warm June breeze, punctuated by a dramatic selection of perennials. The colour palette transitions from warm yellows and oranges, evocative of long summer evenings, through to cooler blues and indigos that signal the oncoming night. A serpentine band of tall grasses flows through the design, which describes the sun and moon’s journey through the sky and creates a dramatic backdrop to the border. Two opposing islands of clipped topiary bookend the bed, creating mass and a sense of permanence in contrast to the frothy grasses.
