Little Spirits Cherry Garden

Mindfulness Gardens

Inspired by the Asian tradition and the Little Spirits garden in Canada, the garden provides spirit houses for miscarried babies. The design also draws on Japanese influences.

The garden contains symbolic elements including a cherry tree and a babbling waterfall, which flows east to west to ensure good fortune. The shallow water channel provides a safe play area for visiting siblings.

Walls enclose two sides of the garden and through it runs a stone path. To each side of the path, iris, Libertia and Hakonechloa create the impression of a Yatsuhashi bridge. The path peters out into stepping stones that are embedded in a timeless ‘moss’ lawn flanked by ferns, Liriope, Gillenia and Baptisia.  A quiet seating area is positioned next to the little spirit houses.
