Systematic Garden by John Clothier

Our brand new RHS Chatsworth Flower Show was an opportunity for aspiring garden designers to take their first step into the industry. In conjunction with the release of the RHS 2017 Climate Change Report, we launched a Design Competition for students and alumni to design a model garden based on the report theme ‘Gardening in a Changing Climate’.

Winner John Clothier with Dan Pearson and runner-up Hannah MartinOur congratulations to the winner John Clothier and to runner-up Hannah Martin, both of whom impressed the judges with their innovation and thoughtful approaches to this challenging subject.

John receives an engraved RHS Trophy along with the opportunity of a week’s work placement at the Dan Pearson Studio in London.

The competition was judged at Chatsworth Flower Show 2017 by:
Dan Pearson – garden designer
Eleanor Webster – RHS climate specialist
Andy Clayden - designer of the RHS Climate Change Garden and lecturer at Sheffield University
Dr Ross Cameron - Senior Lecturer Landscape Management, Ecology & Design at Sheffield University

More information

The process was in two stages.

Firstly, paper-based applications was reviewed and eight designers selected to progress to the next stage.

The second stage was model based, with each successful applicant receiving funding towards creating a model of the garden that will be displayed, along with all supporting and explanatory information, at the show.

Throughout the process, we looked for:

  • Innovation
  • Imagination
  • Originality

Applicants were advised to be creative and not limited to current technology or trends - it was all about predicting future developments and gardening techniques. Ask yourself how our changing climate will influence what plants we can grow and the way we garden and use our outdoor spaces in a domestic setting.
