2017 highlights

RHS Flower Show Cardiff embraced Wales’ Year of Legends, with a host of themed gardens and features to spark the imagination

Encouraging everyone to embrace this year’s magical, mystical theme, the Cardiff Flower Show 2017 again saw the beautiful Bute Park awash with all things floral.

Experience magical show gardens

Always popular, our featured show gardens included Bridgend College’s Y Meudwyaeth, inspired by the Blackfriars monastic site and heritage, as well as Chris Myers’ gold-award winning homage to Blodeuwedd, based on the story of a mythical woman made from flowers who legend has it was turned into an owl as punishment for trying to murder her husband.

Macmillan Cancer Support returned to the show with a contemplative garden focusing on the theme of legacy, and designer Daniel Bodin created a modern garden with a historical twist to encapsulate Welsh heritage and traditions - the Devil's Bridge garden.

Walk on the Wild Side

Two Cardiff based charities - Grow Cardiff and The Dusty Shed – worked together on a display made completely by novice gardeners, containing delicious edibles which support and attract wildlife. Tying in with the myths and legends theme, the garden featured a castle and peasants' cottage made from upcycled pallets and rubbish. There were also a whole host of wildlife themed children's activities including tree climbing, seed bomb making and bug hotel workshops.

Family fun

Cardiff Flower Show was a great day out for the whole family, and we had plenty of things to keep you entertained at the sunny show, including:

• the opportunity to become a bug hunter and discover giant wicker bugs on our children's trail
• the ever popular schools’ wheelbarrow competition
• demonstrations
• live workshops
• bushcraft den building
• the chance to meet some live animals

The Museum of Wales were also at the show with a feature, to tell the story of the diversity of Welsh woodlands both historically and today. The Museum holds huge collections of plant fossils that are hundreds of millions years old and gave visitors the opportunity to try fossil hunting.

Greening the grey

Continuing with the ongoing success of the RHS Greening Grey Britain campaign, Take a Walk on the Wild Side showed how to transform your grey areas into a green paradise for all sorts of insects and animals, to help halt the current decline of Britain’s wildlife.

Fabulous floral exhibits

Cardiff Flower Show wouldn't be an event to remember without its flowers. Nurseries from across the UK could be found in the Floral Marquees and Plant Village with displays bursting with fresh planting ides for the year ahead. Visitors were also able to meet our Master Grower - Tale Valley Nursery and discover their story, plus get some handy horticultural tips from the RHS advisory team.
