RHS Master Grower: Scamp's Daffodils

Visitors found springtime planting inspiration and expertise from Cardiff's Master Grower

Ron and Adrian Scamp of Scamp's Daffodils
Scamp’s Daffodils is the family-run bulb specialist that was named as the RHS Flower Show Cardiff Master Grower for 2019.

The nursery hails from Falmouth, Cornwall and channels its efforts into producing top-quality springtime bulbs. Best known for its daffodils, the nursery also offers tulip, iris, hyacinth, muscari and crocus bulbs. The nursery introduced a new daffodil at the Cardiff 2019 show.

What’s the story of Scamp’s Bulbs?

Scamp’s Bulbs was first founded by Ron Scamp in 1991. Ron’s passion and interest for flowers is lifelong, having spent his childhood on his uncle’s flower farm in the Tamwar Valley and travelling the UK with his father to exhibit at flower shows.

Ron spent years growing different varieties of daffodils in his garden and greenhouse and had amassed a collection of 800 different types by the time he launched Scamp’s Bulbs. Now, nearly 30 years later, the nursery has expanded significantly and offers a collection of more than 2,400 cultivars.

Ron’s son, Adrian, joined the company in 2007 and continues to grow and develop the nursery’s collection.

“We’re not a big nursery compared to some bulb growers,” he said. “We grow 4-4.8ha (10-12 acres). It’s about specialist flowers, not cut-flower production. We are able to keep daffodils that wouldn’t otherwise be seen.”

The display at Cardiff

Field of daffodils at Scamp's DaffodilsScamp’s Daffodils celebrated the collection that Ron has bred throughout his life with a display at Cardiff that featured up to 160 different cultivars.

“We were deeply honoured to be a Master Grower,” said Ron “Our display featured all 13 classifications of daffodil, including trumpet, large-cupped and double.

“We showed daffodils that have been crossed with Narcissus species bulbocodium, cyclamineus, jonquilla, poeticus, tazetta and triandrus, and displayed species of wild daffodil.”

Visitors could also discover an exclusive collection of photographs at the show that detailed what life is like at the Scamp’s Daffodils nursery.
