From The Secret Garden workshops to the ever popular Schools’ Wheelbarrow Competition, our Cardiff show has plenty for children to enjoy
This year RHS Flower Show Cardiff celebrates its 15th birthday. It’s the first RHS show of the year and heralds the arrival of spring, so we’re encouraging everyone to get outside to enjoy time in the garden among nature with a great line-up of activities and events.
The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden film is coming to cinemas this Easter. This enchanting story shows how neglected and unloved spaces can be transformed into beautiful gardens to everyone's benefit. Cardiff regular Anthea Guthrie has designed a Secret Garden for the show to mark the film's release. Mirroring its theme, at the back of the show garden is an untended and unloved space, while at the front, a beautiful garden bursting with blooms illustrates the restorative power of nature.
This is a wonderful feature to inspire children to get gardening. Alongside the garden, they can take part in workshops to make flower crowns, wild masks, and paper flowers and butterflies, as well as having their faces painted – so every younger visitor can take home some of the magic.
The Great Outdoors
To encourage interest in wildlife and pollinators, there are activities run by Cardiff Vale & Valleys Beekeeping Association in which children can make a ‘bee bomb’ as well as beeswax candles. The Woodland Skills Centre is hosting naturecraft workshops to weave willow stars, bird feeders and mini baskets. Skinny Jean Gardener Lee Connelly will be at the show too, helping to enthuse the next generation of gardeners with talks and family activities that kids will love.
Schools’ Wheelbarrow Competition
This popular competition has become a cornerstone of RHS Flower Show Cardiff and always attracts huge interest from schools around Cardiff, Caerphilly and the Vale of Glamorgan. This year there are 62 entries. Come and see how our younger visitors have interpreted the theme ‘Celebration’, a nod to the show’s 15th anniversary and see how they’ve excelled in creating fun and colourful mini gardens.
