During the 18th century Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown transformed the English landscape through his large-scale redevelopments of grand estates and gardens across the country. In the year of the 300th anniversary of his birth, this exhibition at Lindley Library explores his working practices, revealing some of the secrets to his successful business.
The exhibition focuses on the Account Book of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the only one of Brown’s personal account books to survive. Newly conserved and on display to the public for the very first time, the account book contains details of the astonishing amounts of money that changed hands during the implementation of Brown’s ambitious designs. The display will also feature 18th-century books and prints on estate management and improvement, shedding light on the way Brown worked and demonstrating the new popularity of his practical approach.
