A clump-forming rhizomatous perennial up to 35cm high, with evergreen leaves divided into three ovate to narrowly ovate, spiny-toothed leaflets, each up to 6cm long, which emerge marbled with red in spring and mature to mid-green, and spikes of pure white flowers up to 2.5cm across with wide sepals and petals with long, slightly curved spurs, from early spring to mid-spring; Epimedium leaves may be used for their nests by leaf-cutting bees
