A rosette-forming perennial to 90cm high with spiny, narrowly oblong leaves up to 40cm long with woolly-white undersides. Erect, branching stems bear clusters of yellow flowerheads in summer, each up to 10cm across with paler yellow centres and surrounded by spiny bracts
