A slow-growing deciduous shrub, to around 1.2m high, with a dense, rounded habit and oval-shaped, dark green leaves with irregularly toothed edges and pale greyish undersides. Dome-shape clusters of pink buds open to fragrant, tubular white flowers in spring, followed by small berries that ripen to black. Leaves turn dark red before dropping in autumn
