A herbaceous perennial growing to about 80cm in the summer months. It has one, occasionally two green leaves with 3 hanging leaflets with deep red margins. In May-June, a large, deep red, stripy spathe with a darker spadix develops, with an extraordinary long thin appendage 'wandering' further for up to a meter in length
