An evergreen, rhizomatous species from the wet, tropical regions of Borneo, where it is found growing in forests and on riverbanks in the partial shade afforded by the canopies of the surrounding trees. The plant bears non-glossy, leathery, rich green, heart-shaped leaves, with darker green veins. It can reach a height of 1.2m in habitat, although is usually smaller in cultivation. Flowers consist of a white, to pale green, sheath-like spathe, often speckled in purple, surrounding a cream-coloured spadix, or column
