Slow-growing, upright tree to about 5m tall, with leaves 7-8cm long and wide, divided into about 7 lobes, the young leaves dark purple-red, holding the colour well into summer, becoming bronze-green later in summer then bright scarlet-red in autumn. Inconspicuous red-purple flowers in spring may be followed by winged, purple fruits

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in any moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in a sheltered position. Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated if soil is reliably moist. Leaf scorch can be caused by lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure. See Japanese maples cultivation
