An annual aquatic herb with upright, branching stems to around 30cm in height, and lance to oval-shaped green foliage which may or may not be toothed. Plants appear on riverbanks, tidal marshes, pond and lake margins and wet meadows in May, with their distinctive, violet-blue tubular-shaped flowers with three lower lobes appearing from June to October. This plant is already an invasive species in parts of Europe, but currently only established in one part of the UK.
